TUNE Tropic - No Cigar
"Tropic don’t work in a linear fashion. Barely out of school, the Bristol trio consisting of Jack Ogborne (guitar/vocals), Meg Jenkins (bass) and Henry Terrett (drums) already have a sound that is recognisably theirs: a sound that toys with elastic time, dynamic guitar playing and romantic charm. Jack’s voice is a deep husky baritone, his lyrics a mix of the exact and poetic - examining love and the universe through his own prism - whilst musically the trio swing from a tight looping groove into jazz-inspired chaos in seconds, all whilst writing songs that stick in your head for days.
The band’s first single ‘A Continuing Saga #3 (Deja Vu)’ crept out last year on Fresh Juice, and was a remarkably confident first step by a band so young. New single, ‘No Cigar’ pushes that sound further, mixing the unpredictable sleaze of The Birthday Party with the esoteric guitar-work of Lou Reed. The trio claim an eclectic range of influence, stretching from the chaotic noise of CAN and the fiery intensity of James Brown, to the pained story telling of Tom Waits and slacker pop sensibilities of Parquet Courts. They’re a band obsessed with music, absorbing themselves in the work of those that came before them, drawing it all together and reorganising it in their own image." - Christian Northwood, Bristol Live Magazine
