TUNE As Seas Swallow - When It Slips
I've been working on this the past two days. It's obviously much more elaborate than any of my other pieces, both in terms of instrumentation and arrangement.
The key is always in D, though the exact scale changes throughout the song. It starts in D Major, then changes to D Dorian when the march begins. Next it changes to D Locrian coming out of the trumpet/violin duet section and finally back to D Major after the march slows down and switches to just strings and piano at the end.
Metrically, the song starts in 3/4, the march starts in 7/4 (With bar 3 of 4 being in 6/4) before switching to straight 6/4 when the trumpets enter. A bar of 4/4 comes just before dropping to Moderato, where it moves into 3 bars of 7/8. The entire mallet section is in 12/8. The Trumpet/Violin duet starts in 4/4 (With the trumpet phrasing it as 5/4 to imply a polymeter) then changes to 5 bars of 3/4 followed by 2 bars of 5/8 (And repeated). Back to 4/4, then repeated with an accelerando and percussion building up to the D Locrian key change and 5/4, 5/4, 3/4, 5/4, 7/8, 5/4, 7/8. After this the march returns in 6/4, ending in a 5/4 bar and then back to 6/4. The final flute tone is written as 4/4, but that's mostly irrelevant.
