If you are an amateur songwriter or composer, between the ages of 30 and 50 years and use the internet to distribute your music I would like to know what motivates you. If you have 20 minutes to spare, would you mind taking part in a survey and answering a few questions about why you make music.
There has only been one survey on amateur musicians before called The Hidden Musicians by Ruth Finnegan. She looked at the motivations of musicians in Milton Keynes in the UK in the early 1980's.
Ruth Finnegan called her book “The hidden musicians” because at the time, outside of their own locality, these musicians were unknown. With the advent of the internet it suddenly becomes apparent that these musicians who were previously hidden were now out in the open and distributing their music, often free of charge, directly to the public. Musicians who previously had no means of distribution could effectively reach an audience, however small, and even achieve a nominal amount of fame and make some money as well as promote gigs.
I am an amateur musician, I play guitar and bass occasionally, write songs and compose music both electronic and classical. I am interested in why amateurs, who often have an enormous amount of talent, keep doing what they do? It is obviously not for the money because most people don't make any, so why do we keep playing and writing music, what do we get from it and what do we hope to achieve from it, if indeed we are hoping to achieve something. These are the questions that I am hoping you can answer for me. Thank you.
