TUNE Athlete Whippet - All at Once (feat. Olugbenga)
Athlete Whippet & Olugbenga (of Metronomy) unveil a fresh collaboration in the form of new single, All At Once. An instant, pulsating beat from the South London duo, beautifully juxtaposed with Olugbenga's soulful, melodic voice.
Olugbenga Adelekan, who is best known as the bassist in Metronomy, describes his inspiration behind the lyrics thusly:
“I wanted to write a lyric that evoked the excitement of making a connection with someone on a heaving dancefloor. That electricity that can bind two people and make them feel like they are the only ones in the room even if there might be hundreds of other people around them. In those moments it can seem like you are in the thrall of forces beyond your control - these are the moments I know I look for when I go dancing. Sometimes you might go back to the same club or go and see the same DJ hoping to repeat an experience, hoping that lightening will strike twice in the same spot. I've never found that you can re-live those moments. That's what makes them so special.”
Athlete Whippet are a South London House duo consisting of Aviram Barath and Robin Paul Braum. To date they have featured on the likes of Mixmag, Boiler Room, DJ Magazine as well as Radio 1 and 6 Music. They've also shared stages with the likes of Simian Mobile Disco as well as being remixed by an array of talent including Ross From Friends & Baltra. This is their first release collaborating with a guest vocalist. Hinting at new crossover paths - while losing none of their distinctive sound - which has seen them lauded for their warmth and playfulness and also the way in which they fuse genres.
Olugbenga has travelled the world working as a bass player and vocalist, performing and writing with groups such as Solange, Damon Albarn’s Africa Express, Paloma Faith and La Roux. He is best known for his long-standing association with Metronomy, but OLUGBENGA has also lent his talents as a remixer to the likes of Laura Marling, Janelle Monae, Mew, Alt-J, Depeche Mode and the Scissor Sisters.
The resulting EP is a rich and harmonious affair - 3 tracks displaying various elements of dance music - while incorporating traditional instruments, analogue hardware and the use of fragmented samples in the production. Athlete Whippet are set to perform a DJ set at The Curtain on October 18th as part of a curated series of events called 'Athlete Whippet Invite'. This event features Lobster Theremin head Asquith.
