Hanging Valleys is the music of Thom Byles and Michael Phillips. They met working in a post-production house in Soho where they served tea and snacks to hungry editors. The pair were drawn together through their love of soft rock and peanut butter. Dreaming of bigger things they set out on various risk-filled adventures across the country, conquering treacherous peaks and raging seas. After several near death experiences the pair decided it was safer to stay indoors and make music.
Falsetto vocal melodies are accompanied by electric and acoustic guitars which combine to create a rich shifting soundscape. An unusual percussive playing style on the acoustic is blended with percussion and ambient sounds to create pulsing rhythms with captivating crescendos.
Hanging Valleys have released two EPs which have been streamed over 6 million times. Alongside favourable reviews and a growing fan base, Hanging Valleys' music has been gaining momentum, a sound indication that the textures and melodies crafted are connecting and capturing the attention of its audience.
Since their formation, Hanging Valleys have played the Lunario del Auditorio Nacional - Mexico City (Supporting Patrick Watson), St. Giles & Komedia (Supporting William Fitzsimmons), Latitude Festival (BBC Introducing), The Scoop (BBC Introducing), Paradiso - Amsterdam (7 Layers Festival), The Slaughtered Lamb (Supporting Saint Sister) and Foro Normandie (Supporting Low Roar).
Their music has received support from Annie Mac and Huw Stephens on Radio 1 and from Radio X, BBC Introducing, The Selector and Amazing Radio as well as Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer Editorial Playlists. The band were also nominated at the Unsigned Music Awards 2016 & 2018.
