TUNE Cousin Kula - Brain Abroad
Walking into the Kula household you’re met by bundles of bicycles in the hallway, friends’ artwork on the walls and instruments everywhere. In the garden a self-made pizza oven and an array of home grown vegetables demonstrate their ambition for self- sufficiency.
Cousin Kula are a band with an energy not just about the way they make music, but about their day to day life, which translates to the stage with vigour; turning audiences into fans up and down the country.
Today, the 6-piece from Bristol release new single 'Brain Abroad'; an undulating, progressive psych-pop behemoth, partnering delicate synths, with hushed drum patterns
- before bursting into its electrifying chorus, full to the brim with gorgeous vocal harmonies and fizzing guitar runs.
Speaking on the new track release, singer and guitarist Elliot Ellison said: "Sometimes I like to keep the theme of the lyrics undefined, and just see where the words go. In this case, the song became about losing your way a bit, partying too hard, and having those strange thoughts that haunt you the next day.”
Taking a variety of different forms over the past 18 months or so – the new single has been in the band’s back pocket for some time, a staple in their live set – ‘Brain Abroad’ has been reinvented and re-written on numerous occasions.
“We gigged a completely different version for a bit before taking it back to our rehearsal space for a total change in direction,” Elliot went on to say. “In light of that, the chorus
refrain 'too many times to count now' has a certain irony for us. But sometimes, the most challenging songs to write turn out the most interesting. We’re stoked with how it turned
All meeting as highly active members of Bristol’s progressive jazz music scene, Cousin Kula bonded over their shared love for an eclectic range of music from
pop and psych through to prog, disco & afrobeat.
The six members soon found themselves living together and with a rehearsal room in their basement, became one of the tightest and most impressive bands on the Bristol
circuit - blending these genres into something both modern and refreshing.
Following on from their debut EP OODLES (released via Chiverin in 2017), new single 'Brain Abroad' is lifted from the bands forthcoming second EP, due for release later this year.
