TUNE Bomethius - The Machine
Over the course of seven minutes, “The Machine” introduces the religious hang-ups that inform the rest of the record. Dramatic transitions bind together varied styles — everything from clean, tender fingerpicking to a classic Pink Floyd organ and saxophone solo, to a refrain of Renaissance-style polyphony. With a catalogue of vivid figures, the song uses an archetypal machine as an extended metaphor for the twisted faith of predeterminism and the experience of growing up within its confines. In the opening verse, a tight double entendre — “where the aether comforts right down to the bone” — also makes the first of many allusions to chemical sedation. While the line certainly mocks unattainable enlightenment, it also describes a wretch, spurred by persistent doubt and self-loathing, drowning his mind with anesthetic.
